Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
